Types of Dental Crowns

Illustration of dental crownsA dental crown might sound like a miniature crown for a tooth, but it is a cap worn over the visible part of a damaged tooth. These dental prostheses are used to replace damaged teeth requiring additional support. They are used with dental implants to cover the gaps of missing teeth. They restore the shape, size, and appearance of the missing teeth.

The natural tooth is shaped to fit the dental crown and even the bite after the crown's placement. To make the crown, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth. Later on, that crown will be cemented onto the tooth.

What Are the Types of Dental Crowns?

Depending on the material used for making them, crowns can have five different types.

All-Resin Dental Crowns

The most cost-effective option, all-resin dental crowns are made from composite resin. They are colored to look like the rest of the teeth. However, all-resin dental crowns are weaker and susceptible to chipping and damage. They are not a long-term solution due to their weakness.

All-Porcelain Dental Crowns

All-porcelain dental crowns are also called all-ceramic crowns, and they are made of ceramics and porcelain. These metal-free crowns are a good option for people with metal allergies and can be colored to match the teeth. Like resin, porcelain is also prone to breakage, so these crowns have a short life span. Additionally, they cause more harm than good by wearing down the opposite teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Dental Crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal-crowns, or PFM crowns, are the standard in dental restorations. In these crowns, a metal base is covered with a porcelain exterior. So the PFM dental crown has a porcelain appearance but metal's strength. They are popular among individuals looking for aesthetics along with stability.

Metal Dental Crowns

These crowns are made of different metals, such as copper, gold, and platinum, and are extremely strong. Usually, metal crowns are made with precious metals and different base metals, such as nickel-chromium and cobalt-chromium. They are preferred because of their ability to not damage the opposing teeth. There's two disadvantages are their metallic look and they are eroding over time.

Stainless Steel Dental Crowns

Stainless steel dental crowns are primarily used to restore baby teeth in children who have undergone pulp therapy, also known as baby root canals. They're not long-lasting and are meant to be lost along with the primary tooth. A stainless steel crown can be used as a temporary crown to give protection to the tooth while the patient awaits the creation and final fitting of the permanent crown.
