Platelet Rich Plasma

Illustration of a test tube filled with bloodAfter surgery, a patient needs to rest in order to recover from the strain of the procedure and to allow the surgery sites to properly heal. The recovery time can be quickened and eased through a treatment called platelet-rich plasma. Platelet-rich plasma treatment is a procedure that can be done after a surgery in order to give the wound sites everything they need to boost the patient’s healing process.

Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers platelet-rich plasma treatment to those looking to quicken their healing process and to lessen the pain felt while in recovery.

Why Should I have Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment?

Each type of blood cell performs a different role within the body. Platelets are a blood cell that form blood clots at wounds. Platelets are notified of an injury, and they make their way to the injury site. Platelets form scabs, and they are in the white parts of acne spots. Platelet-rich plasma treatment concentrates these platelets at the sites of surgery in order to give the body the extra resources it needs to mend the wound. This means a patient experiences less pain and is in recovery for a shorter period of time. Patients who have poor immunity can benefit from platelet-rich plasma, as it reduces the risk of infection. This is because platelet-rich plasma helps clot the wound quicker and reduces its exposure to possible infections. Patients who are receiving a bone graft for ridge augmentation or to increase bone density before having a restorative procedure can use platelet-rich plasma to help decrease the chance of complications during the process. The aftercare of a bone graft is a delicate process, as our patients will want to disturb the grafting material as minimally as possible. Platelet-rich plasma can decrease the time taken for the grafting material area to become stable and therefore allow the patient to return to their normal habits quicker.

What Is Involved in Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment?

Prior to a procedure, our professionals will need to take a sample of our patients’ blood in order to make the platelet-rich plasma. The sample must come from our patients’ own bodies to ensure there is no risk of the platelet-rich plasma causing infection or being ineffectual. Then, the blood sample is placed in a centrifuge, which is used to separate the platelets from the blood. Once the platelets are separated from the blood, the centrifuge is used again to separate the platelets that contain a high growth factor. These are isolated and replicated in order to create the platelet-rich plasma. Platelet-rich plasma is usually administered via an injection to place the blood cells within a vein close to the surgery area, so the body has the platelet-rich plasma in a medium in which it can use them.

Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment

Unlike the surgical procedure that precedes it, the administration of platelet-rich plasma is non-invasive. In addition to reducing the recovery time of the preceding surgical procedure, the recovery time for the platelet-rich plasma treatment itself is short. And since platelet-rich plasma treatment uses the patient’s own blood, the risk of complications is low.
