Undeniably, there is usually some pain before and after the surgery. What is most important is for patients to understand what pain means after surgery and when they should report to the surgeon immediately.

Post-Operative Pain in Maxillofacial Surgery

A maxillofacial surgery is an invasive procedure, and pain is inevitable in every single case. You are most likely to experience discomfort that can last for about two weeks. Throughout this period, you should continue using pain medications as recommended, such as over-the-counter medications like Advil, Aleve, or Tylenol.

When You Should See the Doctor

Severe pain that does not get better when you take over-the-counter medication is a cause for concern. It is worse if you have to depend on the prescription medicine from your surgeon. Such pains do not go away and do not get better even after taking these pain medications. That is your cue to seek immediate care because it could be a sign that something has gone significantly wrong after your maxillofacial surgery.

How to Keep Pain in Check After Maxillofacial Surgery

Good pain management after a maxillofacial surgery can speed your recovery and be a sign that there are no complications after leaving the operating room. Effective pain management also means that the surgical operation remains a pleasant experience.

Swelling and pain after a surgical operation are common. The solution to the associated discomfort is waiting in your freezer. Ice is a wonderful solution to enhancing your comfort. You need to cover ice with a piece of cloth to prevent direct contact with your skin. Place the ice pack over the point of swelling to the face and not inside the mouth. You can shift the position of the ice pack following a 20-minute interval. You should take a break of about an hour before you repeat the procedure.

An ice pack can help you manage persistent pain, especially when you use it in conjunction with over-the-counter medication. Should the pain persist, make sure to contact your surgeon.
