Debunking Common Myths and Misconceptions About Maxillofacial Surgery

Posted on 6/15/2024 by Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
A man in dental chair ready for oral surgeryOral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is arguably the most effective solution to most dental and facial issues. Despite the benefits, this particular branch of surgery suffers from myriad myths and misconceptions that put off some patients. This post seeks to clarify and debunk some common misconceptions so you can better understand the practice.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Is Only for Major Problems

OMS encompasses a broad range of procedures, ranging from everyday teeth removal to complex jaw surgery and even facial reconstruction. So, if you have ever had a tooth removed or a dental implant, you have inadvertently undergone oral surgeries, albeit minor ones.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Is the Same as Plastic Surgery

Many people believe that any surgery to the face, including maxillofacial surgery, is plastic surgery. However, this is not entirely true. Despite some overlap between the two, they are still entirely different procedures. OMS primarily addresses functional and structural problems in the mouth and face. In contrast, plastic surgery purely focuses on aesthetic enhancements and cosmetic procedures to improve appearance. Examples of procedures in OMS include jaw alignment surgeries, facial reconstruction, and oral pathology. In plastic surgeries, you have procedures like facelifts, nose reshaping (rhinoplasty), and brow lifts.

Only Adults Can Undergo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Although this is a misconception, it is a somewhat fair assumption. This is because a majority of people who undergo OMS are adults who want to enhance their oral health and facial appearance. However, just like all medical procedures, anyone can undergo OMS regardless of age. For instance, children with cleft lips and palates, congenital anomalies, and orthodontic issues often undergo OMS to restore aesthetics and facial and dental functions.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Is Risky and Painful

While surgeries used to be painful and risky in the past, advances in anesthesia, surgical techniques, and equipment have made OMS incredibly safer and less painful. The use of robotics and advanced surgical procedures like laser and piezoelectric surgeries have made OMS more accurate, less invasive, and painless compared to traditional surgeries.
